Fat Camps No More
There was a time when kids would cry when parents threatened, "Lose weight or I'm sending you to fat camp this summer!" These so-called "fat camps" tended to put children and teens on very restrictive diets and make them do endless boring exercises so they could send home a thinner kid at the end of the summer.
These children and teens would often go home happier to be lighter, but soon horrified to discover they had no tools to maintain or continue their weight loss at home. As the pounds creeped back up their parents thought, "What a waste of money."
Enter the new healthy, fun weight loss camps of the 21st Century. The primary goal: send kids home leaner and healthier, but also send them home with the tools they need to not only keep the weight off, but to CONTINUE to lose weight on their own.
Consumer Digest magazine, profiled the most effective of these camps, Wellspring Camps.. And they liked what they saw. These are not the fat camps of the past, but instead, scientifically based adventure programs that teach kids how to eat, how to resist temptation, and how to have FUN getting active.
What makes a fat camp different from a "fit" camp?
| Fat Camp |
Fit Camp |
| Highly restricted foods; campers are hungry |
They know which foods fill you up with great taste, lots of nutrition, but not a lot of calories |
| Repetitive exercise |
Fun activities and adventures that get you active |
| No after-care |
Follow-up after care program that helps you stay on track |
| No long-term studies of the effectiveness (they know everyone gains the weight back) |
Makes a point of following their campers for as long as possible to make sure the program is working for the long term |
The fat camp mentality has given way to a new generation of healthy fit camps that mean a summer adventure where your teen can have fun and learn how to maintain a healthy weight.
